Writing: OPINION ESSAYS

TIPS:

  • First read the rubric and make sure you understand what you are expected to write about.
  • Decide whether you agree or disagree with the statement.
  • Write a PLAN : think about your topic and write down ideas, words and phrases related to the topic.
  • Group your ideas and put them in a logical order.

  • An opinion essay is a formal piece of writing, therefore you cannot use informal language.
  • It requires your opinion on a topic, which must be stated clearly and supported by reasons or examples.

An opinion essay should consist of:

 An INTRODUCTION has three elements:

1. opening statement - a hook (it grabs reader`s attention)
2. background information about the topic
3. a clear opinion statement (your position)

A MAIN BODY (DEVELOPMENT) with 2 or 3 supporting paragraphs: Each paragraph presents a different argument supported by details/examples/reasons/justifications.

A CONCLUSION has three elements:

1. a reformulated opinion/Reinforced opinion

Advantages and disadvantages Essays

In class this morning you were asked to write an essay on The advantages and disadvantages of Slow Fashion.

Please,  READ CAREFULLY:

An advantages and disadvantages essay can also be called, pros and cons, benefits and drawbacks, good and bad aspects...
Basically, in all advantages and disadvantages essays your task is to describe the positive and negative sides of a given topic + give your opinion.
  • Before you start writing your essay, you should always spend a few minutes on producing ideas for your answer. This way, you’ll know what to write about and your answer will be more coherent and well-structured. You need to think of 2-3 advantages and 2-3 disadvantages of the given issue.
Here is a widely accepted standard when it comes to writing an advantages and disadvantages essay:
  • Introduction: Paraphrase the question/topic and briefly mention some of the advantages and disadvantages you will discuss in the paper.
  • Body Paragraph One: Introduce the main (dis)advantage. Give supporting details and examples.Write another advantage and give example /supporting idea.
  • Body Paragraph Two: Introduce the main (dis)advantage. Give supporting details and examples.Write another advantage and give example /supporting idea.
  • Conclusion: Re-iterate the topic question. Summarize the main points and if applicable, say whether you think there are more advantages or disadvantages, (and give your opinion).
TIP 1>>Remember to write in a formal tone, this is an academic essay, therefore your writing should be formal.
This is one possible way to structure your essay;

TIP 2 >> If you believe the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, you should start by writing about those disadvantages in the  1st body paragraph and state it somehow also in the introduction.

TIP  3 >> If the question asks you to write
about advantages/disadvantages and give your opinion, then you need to add an extra paragraph that clearly states your opinion.

AN EXAMPLE

Advantages and disadvantages of developed tourism

Nowadays tourism generates a significant portion of national income for many countries, but it has certain drawbacks too. This essay examines the advantages and disadvantages of tourism and provides a logical conclusion.

On the one hand, one of the main advantages of the developed tourism industry is that it brings a lot of benefits to the contry and a large number of new jobs for the local people. Tourists spend money on a wide range of services, including hotels, amusements, transportation, food and medical services. This way, tourism yields an additional income, greatly supporting the country’s economy. In addition, tourism increases the level of employment by bringing new jobs. For instance, the influx of tourists results in a larger demand in restaurant workers, tour guides, hotel staff and employees of retail services.

On the other hand, tourism also has some major disadvantages, like the destruction of popular tourist destinations and the development of illegal economic activities. Ancient buildings, temples and monuments struggle to cope with a vast amount of visitor’s traffic and could get damaged. Also, the large number of tourists can cause environmental problems. For instance, when places of interest are overcrowded, natural resources often become overexploited. What’s more, the presence of a considerable number of tourists with a lot of money to spend may increase the attraction for criminals and bring with it activities like robbery and drug dealing.

To conclude, although tourism can have certain negative effects like a destructive impact and the growth of crime rate, it has an extremely positive influence on a country’s economy and it provides a large number of new jobs for the local people. In my opinion, these benefits of tourism outweigh its drawbacks.

Writing ... childhood recollections

My favorite childhood memory that sticks out in my head was my dad taking me to see Star Wars when I was six years old. It is the first movie I remember going to see though I don't think it was my first. I remember being transported into this fascinating world and when Luke rescued Leah the audience cheered and applauded. It was so much fun I expected every movie to be like that. Of course it wasn't though I've been a movie buff and especially a science fiction fan ever since (MARK)

--------------------------------------------
My most cherished childhood memory was learning how to read. It wasn't easy but once I did I had that skill for life and nobody could take it away from me. I especially love reading Curious George. Those books really bring a smile to my face. .. that monkey going on all sorts of adventures. I remember one book where he used newspaper to make a special boat that he went in with the man with yellow hat. Pretty funny that is what I remember from my childhood. (PHILIP)

ACTIVITY: d) Student’s book – page 21.

Imagine you were asked to contribute to the book When we were young.  Choose one of the headings in a) and write a paragraph about your childhood -either a specific incident or / and things which happened habitually.

PLEASE, enter comments and write your paragraphs there!

Are you sure you can't?

Today I was hurrying to my car in Las Canteras when I came across a disabled girl in a wheelchair, who could hardly speak or move any parts of her body... And she asked me to go with her and help her open the front door to her house in a block of flats. So I had to go back on my steps and go behind her speedy chair...For a moment I had thousands of thoughts. The strangest being that it could be a trap to kidnap me!?
After I followed all her instructions she managed to go to the lift and... I left with the feeling I had done something good- again- for someone who really needs it; as I've helped those of my family who have had to be in hospital and.......
But this was like a kind of message for my day- today-, I can't explain.. And then a special acquaintance of mine sends me a video via e-mail about a man with no arms no legs, being able to manage and do lots of things in front of an audience of weeping teenagers. And so It makes me wonder again... why should I complain? Why should any of us?
