In my last trip to Madrid- where the VII Congress for EEOOII took place, I happened to meet David Crystal!!!!

I listened to the outstanding speech he gave about the language of text messaging and ITCs in general. I was astounded by his confidence and correct English and I was lucky to get a photo of myself with him (and also I told him a bit about my blogs...) :-)

Anyway, I think he is a genius whose knowledge and wisdom broadly support the work of us teachers.

David Crystal is a writer, editor, lecturer, and broadcaster. He published the first of his 100 or so books in 1964, and became known chiefly for his research work in English language studies, in such fields as intonation and stylistics, and in the application of linguistics to religious, educational and clinical contexts, notably in the development of a range of linguistic profiling techniques for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. He held a chair at the University of Reading for 10 years, and is now Honorary Professor of Linguistics at the University of Wales, Bangor. These days he divides his time between work on language and work on internet applications.

David Crystal's authored works are mainly in the field of language, including several Penguin books, but he is perhaps best known for his two encyclopedias for Cambridge University Press, The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language and The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language. Recent books include A Little Book of Language and Begat: the King James Bible and the English language (both 2010) and a linguistic autobiography, Just a Phrase I'm Going Through (2009). Co-authored books include Words on Words (2000, a dictionary of language quotations compiled with his wife and business-partner, Hilary - Wheatley Medal, 2001) and Shakespeare's Words (2002) and The Shakespeare Miscellany (2005), the last two in collaboration with his actor son, Ben.

Inversion is used to give emphasis or to be rhetorical in more formal situations, in political speeches, on the news, and also in literature. Some native speakers may also use them occasionally in day-to-day conversation.

Look at these examples, and then try the exercises at the bottom of the page.

At no time e.g. At no time did I say* I would accept late homework. Not + object* e.g. Not a single word did she say. Little Little did I know that he was a compulsive liar. Little does she know what surprises we have in store for her. On no account/Under no circumstances On no account should you be absent from your seminars.	Hardly........when > used to refer to an event that quickly follows another. It is usually used with the past perfect. Hardly had I got into bed, when there was a knock at the door. Hardly....before. Hardly had I left before the trouble started. Not until e.g. Not until January will I have a holiday. Nowhere Nowhere had Susan seen a more beautifully decorated room.	So......that This is a common inversion, usually used with an adjective & the verb `be`. So exciting was the soap opera, that I forgot to do my English homework. Such.. that > *Used with the verb `be` and a noun, it means so much* or so great...** Such was the popularity of the soap opera, that the streets were deserted whenever it was on.
No sooner.....than> used to refer to an event that quickly follows another. It is usually used with the past perfect, but sometimes with the simple past. No sooner had I reached the door than I realised it was locked. No sooner did I reach the door than I realised it was locked.	Only alter >usually used with the simple past. Only after the film started did I realise that I'd seen it before. Only then/if/when/later >usually used with the simple past. e.g. Only then did I know what I had got myself into	Not only.....but also Not only do I know the answer to the question but also have I decided no to tell you...

Rarely/Seldom/Never
These are most commonly used with the present perfect or past perfect, & with modals such as can and could. The present simple can also be used.
Seldom have I seen him looking so miserable.
Never in her life had she experienced this exhilarating emotion.

Scarce.ly/Barely....when > used to refer to an event that quickly follows another. It is usually used with the past perfect
Scarcely had I arrived home when there was a knock on the door.

Also, we can use inversion for emphasis.

Little did she know how much work was left.
On no account must you sleep at school.
Never should you remember who's your boss.
Only then can you belong to me.

This Spanish idiom expression does not exist in English as such. It so happens with most idiomatic expressions of the like: they have not an equivalent in our language or viceversa.

How to become a more confident English speaker:

DUDE: Amer. For ‘mate’ or friend (tío)

DUH: interj. Used to express what is being said is too obvious

• Practise where and when you can. Any practice is good – whether you speak to someone who is a native English speaker or not!

• It's important to build your confidence. If possible, use simple English sentence structure that you know is correct, so that you can concentrate on getting your message across.

• Try to experiment with the English you know. Use words and phrases you know in new situations.

• Read, read, read. It’s good to read aloud long texts, and listen to the CD if you feel you have to correct your pronunciation.

• Listen to English songs and SING! That also helps a lot to improve your pronunciation. There are millions of songs in English, for sure some you’ll find you like!

• Try to respond to what people say to you. You can often get clues to what people think by looking at their body language. Respond to them in a natural way.

• Try NOT to translate into and from your own language. This takes too much time and will make you more hesitant.

• If you forget a word, try to use a similar one or explain using other words you know well. Also you can say ‘ummm…’, or ‘er…’, until the right words come. This is better than keeping completely silent.

• Don't speak too fast! It's important to use a natural rhythm when speaking English, but if you speak too fast it will be difficult for people to understand you.

• Try to relax when you speak – you'll find your mouth does most of the pronunciation work for you. When you speak English at normal speed, you'll discover that many of the pronunciation skills, such as linking between words, will happen automatically.

• Speak on and on... Your accent may be British or American, both are understood ( at least most of the time!) :-)

Pretend you were the only person on earth. You were born from unknown origins and have always lived alone. Let’s say that you are also completely self-sufficient and can survive complete isolation..

Now tell me, what would you own?

You wouldn’t be able to answer that because the concept doesn’t make sense to you. Without other people to compare, trade, boast and compete with ownership is an illusion. There is no stuff that is yours and not yours, just the world.

This is why forsaking all goods doesn’t free you from the tight chains of consumerism. You are falling for the myth of ownership and fighting against it. But the person truly free of this grasp will realize you can’t fight something that doesn’t exist. Canceling the dualistic reasoning of mine and not mine, is the first step...

Bonfire Night...

For 400 years, bonfires have burned

on November 5th to mark the failed Gunpowder Plot.

The tradition of Guy Fawkes-related bonfires actually began the very same year as the failed coup. The Plot was foiled in the night between the 4th and 5th of November 1605. Already on the 5th, agitated Londoners who knew little more than that their King had been saved, joyfully lit bonfires in thanksgiving. As years progressed, however, the ritual became more elaborate.

Soon, people began placing effigies onto bonfires, and fireworks were added to the celebrations. Effigies of Guy Fawkes, and sometimes those of the Pope, graced the pyres. Still today, some communities throw dummies of both Guy Fawkes and the Pope on the bonfire (and even those of a contemporary politician or two), although the gesture is seen by most as a quirky tradition, rather than an expression of hostility towards the Pope.

Preparations for Bonfire Night celebrations include making a dummy of Guy Fawkes, which is called "the Guy". Some children even keep up an old tradition of walking in the streets, carrying "the Guy" they have just made, and beg passersby for "a penny for the Guy." The kids use the money to buy fireworks for the evening festivities.

On the night itself, Guy is placed on top of the bonfire, which is then set alight; and fireworks displays fill the sky.

The extent of the celebrations and the size of the bonfire varies from one community to the next. Lewes, in the South East of England, is famous for its Bonfire Night festivities and consistently attracts thousands of people each year to participate.

Bonfire Night is not only celebrated in Britain. The tradition crossed the oceans and established itself in the British colonies during the centuries. It was actively celebrated in New England as "Pope Day" as late as the 18th century. Today, November 5th bonfires still light up in far out places like New Zealand and Newfoundland in Canada.

A Brief History of Halloween

Halloween has its origins in the ancient Samhain festival celebrated by the Celts to signify the end of summer. Many of today’s Halloween customs can be traced back to Celtic times. Halloween is also known as All Saint’s Day. The Roman Catholic Church created this name to celebrate saints without their own specific days during the rest of the year.

European Halloween Customs

Bonfires are often lit in Ireland on October 31st. This tradition dates back to the Celts, who used fire to ward off evil spirits. The Celts also dressed in animal skins on Halloween, and believed that the dead returned to earth disguised as various creatures.

One of these creatures was a black cat, which remains a familiar symbol of Halloween.

Apples also have strong ties to Halloween. Some believe the fruit can be used to predict future partners. Another Halloween custom involves bobbing for apples in water. In Scotland this is referred to as “dooking.”

Jack o’ Lanterns are a familiar site at Halloween. There are several theories about where they originate from. An 18th century Irish folk tale features a character called Jack, who is refused entry to both heaven and hell upon his death. The Devil shows him pity and presents Jack with a lump of coal. Jack then places the coal inside a hollowed out turnip, lights it and uses I to illuminate his path.

Other explanations include references to the will o’ the wisp phenomena, when peculiar lights are seen to form over peat bogs. Night watchmen were sometimes referred to as Jack o’ Lanterns, providing yet another possible origin for today’s pumpkin carving.

Halloween in America

Halloween did not become a major festival in America until the early 19th century, when it was popularised by the huge number of Irish immigrants arriving. Nowadays it is the second largest festival in the country, after Christmas. European customs such as trick or treating and wearing fancy dress are widespread.

This Bristol trio has become one of the best trip-hop groups ever, even possibly responsible for the trip-hop genre, featuring the skills of Grant Marshall (aka Daddy Gee), Robert del Naja (3D), and Andrew Vowles (Mushroom). In 1988 they formed the creative core of Massive Attack. Three years later in 1991 their debut album Blue Lines was greeted with much acclaim. skyrocketed and what we did was a sight to see
America, the nation that Westerners obey
in exchange for protection engaged in an election
It was famously contested so with baited breath
the world’s gaze headed Westward ---10
With the battle of the ballots hanging in the balance
There was a lack of ballast in who would inhabit the palace
And in Bush and Gore’s manic rush to the door
there was a panic and all planning was pushed to the floor
The winner was a mystery, so it was handed to the courts ---15
who handed it to George and Bush was given victory
And in an instant, Clinton’s stint
of stability, – well it was history
We met the neighbours, they made us get acquainted
with the daily dangers that they’re facing ---20
They took a plane and they made it change destination
to shake a great Western nation
And the pain of that day made the next generation
of patriots praying for good or baying for blood
Terror attacks in America taxed ---25
the president’s head to the max, not yet to mention Iraq
The inevitable reaction in Afghanistan
was the centre of a grander plan

YES!!! We are having some cultural days at the EOI Arucas and you are all invited to come. Activities will be on Tuesday and Wednesday evening and Thursday morning (17th-19th November). Of course you will be expected to come in your lesson time but you are free to come to any of the other activities - more information at the end of the week.

Meanwhile, you can start getting ready by preparing a cake recipe for the cake competition. Send it to arucaseoi.gmail.com and bring your cake to be judged on Wednesday evening (around 5.30) or Thursday morning (around 11am). Mmmmm - my taste buds are coming alive already!

If cooking isn't your thing, then why not take part in the mini saga competition? Write a story of no more than 50 words and hand it in to your teacher in order to compete. Here are two examples:

The Queen of Crime Agatha Christie is the best-selling author of all time. She has sold over two billion books worldwide and has been translated into over 45 languages. In a writing career that spanned more than half a century, Agatha Christie wrote eighty novels and short story collections. She also wrote over a dozen plays, including The Mousetrap, which is now the longest running play in theatrical history. Christie's first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, was the first to feature her eccentric Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. One of the most famous fictional creations of all time, Poirot's 'little grey cells' triumphed over some of the most devious criminal minds ever created in crime fiction. Christie’s last published novel, Sleeping Murder, featured her other world-famous sleuth, the shrewdly inquisitive Miss Jane Marple of St. Mary Mead. Miss Marple appears in twelve novels, and twenty short stories; the first novel to feature her was The Murder at the Vicarage in 1930. The Poirot and Marple novels have been widely dramatized in feature films and television movies. Murder on the Orient Express (1974), Witness for the Prosecution (1957), And Then There Were None (1945), and Death on the Nile (1978) are a few of the successful films based on her works. Agatha Christie also wrote six romantic novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. She also wrote non-fiction; one book Come Tell Me How you Live, describes her archeological travels with her husband Max and the other two are collections of poems, stories and verses, some with a religious theme. She also wrote her Autobiography which she completed in 1976. Although synonymous with crime fiction, the breadth of themes in her novels is quite extraordinary and she deserves her place as one of the best-loved writers of all time.

Typical mistakes:
- Where are the others photos?
The another boy was smaller
-
When other is used as an adjective , it cannot have plural form. Others is only used as a pronoun, to mean 'other ones' or 'other people.'
Compare:
-Where are the other photos?
-Have you got any other colours?
-Some metals are magnetic and others aren’t.
-Can you tell the others that I’ll be late?
..
*ANOTHER can be used in the sense of ‘an additional’, ‘an extra’.
Can I have another pint of beer, please?
..
Another can also be used in this way before a plural expression beginning with a number or few.
--- Another three pints, please.
--- I’ll be away for another few weeks...
